This week I returned to the House of Commons to contribute to the debate initiated by the Opposition on cladding. Here I encouraged colleagues from across the House to support my proposed joint amendment to the Fire Safety Bill so leaseholders no longer have to worry about being held liable for cladding remediation works. An issue repeatedly missed in debates is the different types of leaseholders impacted. 2 out of 44 flats in my building are owner occupied. I struggle to understand why there is not the focus on owner occupiers to be given priority over investors. Where I appreciate investors circumstances vary, why should tax payers money be given to those holding property as an investment rather than those risk being made homeless?
