Today is Battle of Britain Day which this year is marking 80 years since the most fiercely fought 24 hours of the conflict. It is important that we remember the outstanding contribution which the men and women involved made both in the air and on the ground to help protect our country.
Southampton has a proud association with the Spitfire so contributed hugely to this effort. Many ordinary people in the city were involved in the construction of the aircraft which played a critical role in defeating The Luftwaffe in the skies above the UK. The success of the aircraft manufacture in Southampton made the city a key target in The Blitz, of which some of the scars still show today.
In the words of the then Prime Minister Winston Churchill, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”
