The Government announced this week that Southampton will be receiving £17 million of investment to upgrade the railway for freight trains.
This will allow longer trains to serve the Port of Southampton, increasing rail capacity, reducing the reliance on the roads and cutting air pollution. It is valuable initiatives like this and shore power which will significantly reduce carbon emissions, not harebrained schemes proposing to charge lorries and cars to enter the city.
Once again this shows that the Government is serious about levelling-up Southampton by delivering a multi-million pound infrastructure investment which will benefit the local economy.
