As we approach the 75th anniversary of VE Day, we remember the sacrifices made to protect the freedoms and liberties we all deeply cherish. In Southampton, I am proud of the extraordinary contributions our city made to the defence of our island, where the iconic Spitfire was designed, built and flown. The Government’s pledge of £3 million for the building of a Spitfire monument will ensure an enduring and lasting legacy to the iconic aircraft and all those that not only flew her defending the country’s liberty, but those that risked their lives in its production as well. I hope when the monument is completed, it will serve as a constant reminder to present and future generations that no matter how hard times are, as a country we will always pull through, more united and stronger than ever in our determination for a brighter future. #VEDay75
