Today my Conservative Councillor colleagues in Southampton launch their consultation into the future of our weekly bin collection. The Labour Council has decided to axe the weekly collection of domestic waste.
In order to better represent your views to the city council it would be very helpful if you would share your thoughts with us.
You can email weeklycollection@gmail.com or text YES/NO with your name, house number and postcode to 07812 409477
With regard to changes in bin collections from weekly to fortnightly, I would consider this to be a VERY RETROGRADE STEP — especially from a communal health point of view.
I am not from a large family myself, so probably would not be too much affected, but I can see that the dangers of changing to fortnightly collections from some families would lead to problems with over-spilling rubbish (including food)
at some properties, leading to infestations of RATS and the like.
There would also be quite a big increase in FLY TIPPING causing more problems for residents and the authorities.
In those circumstances (and considerable forethought) I Vote, LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE !
There are 5 people in our household and I have no issue with fortnightly collections. The bin is rarely more than half full in a week, particularly when we recycle as much as possible.
The council is in a difficult position as central government has been cutting funding in real terms since 2010. Royston has consistently voted with the government to reduce taxes and cut funding of local government. That means reducing public services – it is really that simple.
Here we go again as we are asked to pay more and receive less! This retrograde step will encourage fly tipping, rats and
all sorts of vermin. Where do we go next— two weeks, perhaps at a pinch we could manage three!
More ways of cutting back with funding!. Its bad enough with the rubbish left all over the pathements once the bin men have been. These cut backs would result in rats and vermin everywhere, and become a health problem.
I live on my own and my bin is always full so I dont know how a family would be able to cope should this stupid idea come into affect. Not to mention the “Fly Tipping” which many will adopt!
